In contrast to V1 the PC65816 V2 is built using CPLDs. For that reason the design needs much less devices in spite of expanded capabilities. The used ispLSI CPLDs can be reprogrammed in the system. Because of the usage of CPLDs I got independent of the availability of some older chips, like the CRT controller MC6845, which I used in the PC65816 V1.
The main goal for the development of the PC65816 V2 was not to reach a maximum clock speed but a maximum functionality. So there are integrated a PS/2 keyboard interface, a CRT controller with a character mode of 80x25, an ethernet controller and a real time clock. Instead of a SCSI interface the new system has got an IDE controller.
The whole circuit suits on a pcb of 16 cm x 16 cm and needs only a 5V power supply.
